Presenting The Few Lilies Project
The Few Lilies Project exists to promote awareness of the issue of domestic violence and raise money for Safe Harbor. Through the theatre production and the accompanying art exhibit the audience will be confronted with the issue in a unique way, and will be provided with the opportunity to contribute additional funds, above the initial ticket price, directly to Safe Harbor.
Theatre Production:
The Bird & Baby Theatre Co. is producing the one act play I Dream Before I Take the Stand by Arlene Hutton. In addition to this powerful play, local playwright Anne Pecaro has been commissioned by The Bird & Baby Theatre Co. to create new monologues based on the stories of domestic abuse survivors from Safe Harbor.
I Dream Before I Take the Stand synopsis:
A defense lawyer cross-examines a woman during her testimony in a sexual assault case -- and in doing so, horribly distorts her perfectly innocent walk in the park.
Arlene Hutton is a member of New Dramatists and a MacDowell Colony fellow. She is the author of Last Train to Nibroc (2000 New York Drama League Best Play nomination) and the Shaker drama As It Is In Heaven, both of which were selected for Smith & Kraus Best Women Playwrights anthologies. A four-time Heideman Award finalist and a three-time Samuel French Short Play Festival winner, her New York credits include 78th Street Theatre Lab, The Barrow Group, Circle-in-the-Square Downtown, Alice's Fourth Floor, Ensemble Studio Theatre, HERE, and Vital Theatre.
Anne Pecaro is a poet & playwright living in Upstate South Carolina. She is currently enrolled in Spalding University's MFA in playwriting and is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America.
Art Exhibit:
The Bird & Baby has commissioned several local, visual artists to create works of art using G. M. Hopkins’ poem “Heaven-Haven” as inspiration, creating a thematically unified art show. These works of art will be on display in the Bird & Baby clubhouse throughout the entire run of The Few Lilies Project.
